Session 8E | Room K146: Special Session: Radicalizing Education for Sustainable Consumption? (Organizers: Daniel Fischer, Sonja Geiger & Victoria Thoresen)
This discussion session highlights three perspectives on potentially impactful new qualities of education for sustainable consumption (ESC). Daniel Fischer diagnoses a cognitive bias in existing approaches to ESC & argues for greater appreciation of & deeper engagement with the emotional & affective dimensions of consumer behavior. Sonja Geiger focuses on the types of consumption practices that are addressed in ESC & suggests that instead of engaging with low-impact behaviors, efforts should be placed on tackling consumption practices with the greatest sustainability impacts. Victoria Thoresen proposes putting engagement with individual consumer behavior back into context & focusing on the dynamics of social mobilization for broader systemic change.
